President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Ukraine to “immediately” accept Russia’s invitation for direct talks in Turkey, saying it would clarify whether a ceasefire is possible and help Western allies plan next steps. His appeal came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced his team was “ready to meet” Russian representatives, following Vladimir Putin’s proposal for Istanbul talks on Thursday—contingent on an unconditional ceasefire beginning Monday.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote that “President Putin of Russia doesn’t want to have a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, but rather wants to meet…to negotiate a possible end to the bloodbath.” He added that he was “starting to doubt that Ukraine will make a deal with Putin” and concluded, “Have the meeting now!”
