Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Russia to agree to an unconditional ceasefire starting May 12, expressing Ukraine’s readiness to engage in peace talks if the truce is upheld.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Russia to confirm an unconditional ceasefire beginning on May 12, emphasizing that Ukraine is prepared to meet for discussions if hostilities are paused. His statement followed backing from European leaders and U.S. President Donald Trump for a 30-day truce.
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed direct talks with Kyiv, set to take place in Turkey on May 15, in response to the ceasefire initiative. Zelenskyy described the ceasefire as a vital first step toward ending the conflict.
"There is no point in prolonging the violence," he stated on social media, urging Russia to confirm a full and lasting truce.
Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, echoed the call for an immediate ceasefire, warning against ambiguous declarations that could prolong the conflict.
