Bulgaria is stepping up preparations to host the Ninth Global Conference on Wine Tourism this autumn in Plovdiv, with Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh leading a series of high-level meetings to finalize venues and partnerships.
Bulgaria’s Ministry of Tourism is actively preparing for the country’s hosting of the Ninth Global Conference on Wine Tourism, organized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), to be held this autumn in the city of Plovdiv.
Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh visited Plovdiv to assess potential locations and review plans for the conference's cultural and professional programme. Accompanied by Plovdiv Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov and municipal and ministerial experts, Borshosh toured key sites suitable for large-scale international events.
The preparations follow the signing of a letter of intent between Minister Borshosh and UN Tourism Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili during an official meeting in Sofia in February 2025.
"Plovdiv is the natural choice to host UN Tourism's 9th Global Conference on Wine Tourism," Borshosh said. "It is a city with a rich cultural history, a modern urban environment and an established position as one of the leading wine regions in the country."
Plovdiv has gained international recognition for its wine culture, being named Europe’s Best Wine Capital for 2025 by European Best Destinations and listed among the world’s top 10 wine tourism destinations by Wine Enthusiast magazine.
During the visit, the delegation explored cultural, academic, and business venues, and held discussions with local stakeholders to coordinate partnerships. The team also examined accommodation options and event logistics to ensure alignment with UN Tourism’s standards.
The conference is expected to bring together global experts and stakeholders in wine tourism to explore the intersections of travel, culture, and sustainable development.
