President Trump has extended ByteDance’s deadline to sell TikTok by 75 days, as talks continue to prevent the app’s shutdown in the U.S.
United States President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for Chinese technology company ByteDance to sell TikTok to a non-Chinese buyer by 75 days.
The hugely popular video-sharing app, which has over 170 million American users, is under threat from a U.S. law passed last year that requires TikTok to separate from ByteDance or face a shutdown in the United States.
Trump has insisted that his administration is close to securing a deal involving multiple investors to keep TikTok operational. He explained that the extension is necessary to allow more time to finalize the deal and obtain all required approvals.
China is currently facing a 54% tariff on goods imported into the United States. Trump has indicated he would consider reducing these tariffs to help facilitate a deal with ByteDance.
Trump also mentioned that his administration is in contact with four different groups regarding a potential TikTok deal, though he did not name them.
ByteDance has confirmed it is in discussions with the U.S. government to find a solution but warned that several key issues still need to be resolved.
The push to force the sale of TikTok is driven by national security concerns and the belief in Washington that TikTok is under the control of the Chinese government.
