Four U.S. soldiers are missing near Lithuania’s border with Belarus, prompting an ongoing recovery operation after their vehicle was found submerged in water.
The Lithuanian army says it is searching for four U.S. soldiers who have been missing for two days during military drills in the Baltic state.
The soldiers and their tracked vehicle went missing on Tuesday afternoon near the border with Belarus.
The U.S. Army reported that the vehicle was found submerged in water, and recovery efforts are underway involving the U.S. Army, Lithuanian Armed Forces, and civilian agencies.
NATO chief Mark Rutte had earlier said he was informed of the soldiers' deaths but added he did not have further details. NATO has since clarified that the search is still ongoing and apologized for the confusion, stating that Rutte was referring to emerging news reports and was not confirming the soldiers’ fate.
