Amazon has paused its operations with 21 Air, the Miami-based cargo carrier that operated an Amazon Air flight which crashed at Miami International Airport last weekend, killing five people.
The decision comes as investigators continue to examine what caused the accident on 6 September.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company had spent the past week reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“After the tragic incident last weekend, we've spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances, and we’ve decided to pause our operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598,” Nantel said in a statement to Reuters.
“We'll continue working to support the investigation and everyone affected,” she added.
The crash involved a cargo flight operated by 21 Air for Amazon Air, Amazon’s air cargo network. The aircraft overran the runway while landing at Miami International Airport and hit several vehicles on the ground, officials said.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is investigating the crash, said the pilots had considered aborting the landing after the aircraft touched down.
The NTSB also said one of the pilots had warned that they were flying “too fast” just over a minute before the aircraft landed.
Investigators based the finding on information recovered from the flight data recorder.
The Boeing 767-300 freighter was 32 years old. According to flight-tracking service Flightradar24, it had previously operated as a passenger aircraft for several airlines between 1994 and 2015.
The aircraft was on its third flight of the day when it crashed.
It had earlier flown from Cincinnati to Miami, followed by a flight from Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was returning from San Juan when the fatal accident occurred.
The cargo carrier 21 Air said it was continuing to work with investigators and support those affected by the crash.
“We remain focused on supporting the families and loved ones who were impacted by this accident, as well as working closely with the NTSB and all our partners, like Amazon, as the investigation continues,” the company said.
“We are confident in our safety policies, procedures and training,” it added.
