Investigators said they have recovered the flight data and cockpit voice recorders from an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane that overran the runway and crashed while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday (6 September), killing five people on the ground.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the two devices, known as black boxes, were recovered on Monday (7 September) and would be taken to the agency’s headquarters in Washington for evaluation.
NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy, who is leading a team of 32 investigators at the airport, said the two people aboard the aircraft, the pilot and co-pilot, survived and had not yet been interviewed. Three other people were critically injured.
The 32-year-old Boeing 767-33A, operated by Miami-based 21 Air LLC, overran the runway by about 1,300 feet (396 metres) before crashing into two vehicles. One was an Econoline van carrying seven members of an airline cleaning crew, while the other was a Toyota SUV travelling on a road outside the airport perimeter.
Homendy said investigators were still collecting and documenting evidence and that a probable cause would not be determined until the investigation was complete.
Crews were also removing jet fuel from the aircraft and crash site, leaving two of the airport’s four runways closed. Flights resumed on Sunday evening after the airport temporarily halted operations following the crash.
Describing the scene, Homendy called it “utter devastation”, noting extensive debris, tire marks across the grass and severe damage to both vehicles.
The aircraft had been on its third flight of the day, arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Earlier on Sunday, it had flown from Cincinnati to Miami and then from Miami to San Juan. The crash occurred at 13:53 EDT.
Investigators will also examine the absence of an Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS), a runway safety system designed to slow or stop aircraft that overrun a runway. Not all U.S. airports are equipped with the system.
Homendy has asked members of the public to submit any photographs or videos they captured of the crash site, saying they could help investigators determine what happened.
