In a significant diplomatic effort to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, U.S. and Russian delegations have commenced talks in Riyadh aimed at establishing a partial ceasefire, with a focus on the Black Sea region.
The discussions are taking place at the Ritz-Carlton hotel, with U.S. negotiators working with both Ukrainian and Russian representatives.
Ukrainian officials, including Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, described their recent talks with the U.S. as "productive and focused." These discussions have centered on infrastructure and shipping safety, particularly concerning Black Sea shipping lanes. Ukraine's delegation is also eager to pursue a ceasefire and ensure the protection of vital energy infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Russian delegation, led by diplomat Grigory Karasin, is seeking to revive the 2022 Black Sea grain deal. This agreement, which allowed Ukraine to export grain while protecting it from Russian attacks, had been suspended after Russia pulled out in 2023, citing unresolved sanctions issues.
Though the U.S. remains hopeful about securing a partial ceasefire, both sides face significant hurdles. Ukrainian adviser Serhiy Leshchenko noted that while the talks are promising, they may not yield immediate results, acknowledging the challenges of negotiating with Russian leadership.
As the talks unfold, ongoing attacks between Ukraine and Russia continue, with Ukraine reporting the interception of numerous Russian drones overnight and successful strikes against Russian military helicopters by Ukraine's special forces.
While the potential for a ceasefire remains uncertain, the Riyadh talks represent a crucial step in the broader efforts to de-escalate the conflict and seek a long-term solution to the war in Ukraine.
