Poland's prime minister visited the Belarus border to highlight a $2.55 billion defence plan amid growing European fears of a future Russian threat.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, along with the Defence and Interior Ministers, has visited the Polish-Belarusian border to inspect a fortified barrier that is part of the country’s expanded defence programme.
Poland previously announced a $2.55 billion initiative called "East Shield," aimed at strengthening defences along its eastern border with Belarus and Russia. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.
Across Europe, defence spending is rising sharply amid concerns that the United States—Europe’s long-standing security guarantor since World War II—is shifting its strategic focus to the Indo-Pacific.
Tusk stated that European Union leaders now agree the EU must be fully capable of defending itself against a potential Russian attack by 2030. He said the five-year timeline aligns with an assessment by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who warned that Russia could rebuild its offensive capabilities—after losses in Ukraine—by then, making an attack on Europe possible.
