Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya called the Trump administration's steel and aluminum tariffs "regrettable" during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the G7 foreign ministers' summit in Canada.

Iwaya urged the US to exempt Japan from planned auto tariffs and emphasized strengthening bilateral ties, aligning with agreements between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and President Trump. Rubio acknowledged the US-Japan relationship as "extremely important."

They also discussed Ukraine and Gaza, though details were not provided. Iwaya met with Canadian, British, and Italian counterparts to enhance cooperation. Meanwhile, Trump announced a 25% tariff on imported cars, set to take effect April 2.

Japan currently faces a 2.5% levy, with 1.37 million vehicles exported to the US, making up 28.3% of Japan's total exports to the US by value.
