A 4.4 magnitude earthquake hit southern Italy early Thursday morning, causing significant damage in Naples and nearby areas. The tremor, with a shallow depth of 3 km, struck near Pozzuoli, west of Naples. Many residents spent the night outdoors or in their cars, fearing aftershocks.

Damage was reported across Naples, especially in Bagnoli, where a ceiling collapsed, cars were damaged, and a church bell tower was affected. One person was rescued from a collapsed house, though no fatalities have been reported. Minor aftershocks followed the initial tremor, heightening fears.

Power outages and train delays were also reported in Naples, while schools in Bagnoli were closed for safety checks. Civil protection officials have launched a damage assessment operation and established a coordination centre in the region.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as residents remain alert to the possibility of further aftershocks.
