A series of earthquakes have struck Guatemala on Tuesday afternoon, leading authorities to advise residents to evacuate from buildings as a precaution against possible aftershocks.

The initial 5.2-magnitude quake hit southern Guatemala, approximately 60 kilometres from Guatemala City, according to the national seismological institute.

It was followed by multiple aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging between 3.9 and 5.6.

Local media images showed some structural damage to buildings, though authorities reported no major collapses or injuries at the time.

The country’s disaster response agency urged the public to leave both public and private buildings to ensure safety.
