European nations have endorsed a $53 billion Arab-backed plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing its residents, rejecting a rival proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump.
European nations have voiced support for an Arab-backed plan to rebuild Gaza at a cost of $53 billion without displacing its Palestinian population.
The plan, drafted by Egypt and adopted by Arab leaders, has been rejected by Israel and U.S. President Donald Trump, who argue it does not address Gaza’s realities. Trump has instead proposed transforming Gaza into a "Middle East Riviera," a vision that would require the displacement of its 2.3 million residents and has been widely condemned in the Arab world.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy, and Britain welcomed the Arab-backed initiative as a realistic approach, outlining a five-year reconstruction period.
The plan, also endorsed by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, was presented by Egypt at an emergency Arab League summit. It calls for Gaza to be governed temporarily by a committee of independent experts and for international peacekeepers to be deployed in the territory.
