Slovaks take to the streets in nationwide protests against Prime Minister Robert Fico’s pro-Russian policies, demanding his resignation.
Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets across Slovakia, opposing the pro-Russian policies of Prime Minister Robert Fico’s government.
Regular demonstrations began after Fico traveled to Moscow in late December for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, making him one of the few European Union leaders to visit the Kremlin since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Protesters accuse Fico of aligning Slovakia with Russia while distancing the country from Europe, demanding his resignation. His threats to withdraw Slovakia from the European Union have further fueled public anger.
Demonstrators also condemned the recent pro-Russian actions of Fico’s close aides. His chief advisor, Erik Kaliňák, sparked outrage after stating that Slovakia “would finally have a reliable neighbor” if Russia conquered Ukraine.
According to organizers, rallies were held in approximately 40 cities both within Slovakia and abroad.
