UK prosecutors have charged two men over an incident in September at RAF Fairford, a Royal Air Force base in south-west England used by U.S. forces. British counter-terrorism police said the pair are suspected of assisting Iran.

Mohmed Abdulkarim, 24, was charged with conduct likely to materially assist a foreign intelligence service. Nouman Essghir, also 24, was charged with entering a prohibited place “for a purpose prejudicial” to the UK.

Counterterrorism police said the two men will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Tuesday.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing in the UK, said officers believed the country Abdulkarim was assisting was Iran.

Five British nationals aged 23 to 25 were arrested in the early hours of 27 September in Whelford, a village near the base, after police received reports of three suspicious vehicles heading towards it. A dozen US B-1B Lancer bombers were stationed at Fairford at the time, and the U.S. later withdrew them.

The base is British-owned, but hosts the U.S. Air Force. In recent months, American bombers have flown from it after the UK government approved its use for what it described as defensive strikes on Iran.

Iran has strongly denied any involvement in the Fairford base incident. Tehran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the UK was “barking up the wrong tree.” The decision to bail the suspects was criticised by U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump.

Frank Ferguson, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, said, “The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute two individuals with National Security Act offences following a Counter Terrorism Policing investigation into a high-profile incident involving RAF Fairford.”

The five other men arrested during the investigation remain on police bail.
