The family of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen fatally shot by an immigration agent in Minneapolis in January, has sued the Trump administration, accusing federal officials of excessive force and unconstitutional conduct.
Good, 37, was shot on 7 January by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross during federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota.
Her family filed two lawsuits on Thursday seeking damages and a jury trial.
The lawsuits accuse Ross and senior Trump administration officials of violating Good’s civil rights and allege that the broader enforcement operation, known as Operation Metro Surge, contributed to her death.
Good and her wife, Becca Good, had reportedly stopped their car after seeing immigration agents conducting street patrols. The lawsuits say Renee Good honked her horn to warn neighbours while her wife filmed the operation.
Video of the shooting shows Good briefly reversing before turning the vehicle and attempting to drive away. Ross then fired into the vehicle, killing her.
The lawsuits describe Good as a poet and mother of three children and say she was not the subject of any federal investigation.
The White House called the lawsuits baseless and said the Trump administration would vigorously defend itself.
The Department of Homeland Security has defended the conduct of Ross and other immigration officers, describing their use of force as justified in dangerous situations. Ross has not publicly discussed the shooting.
Good's killing triggered widespread protests against the federal immigration crackdown in Minnesota. The operation was ended in February, while President Donald Trump has continued to defend his immigration policies.
Federal prosecutors in Minneapolis were initially prevented by the Justice Department from investigating the agents involved, prompting several prosecutors to resign, according to Reuters. No agents involved in Good's death have been charged.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty is separately investigating the deaths of Good and Alex Pretti, another U.S. citizen fatally shot by immigration agents in Minneapolis later in January.
The investigation has been complicated by a lack of federal cooperation, while Minnesota has sued the Trump administration for access to evidence gathered at the shooting scenes.
