The Trump administration has urged France and Germany to release emergency diesel reserves to ease global fuel prices, warning they could otherwise face restrictions on U.S. diesel exports, according to three people familiar with the discussions who spoke to Reuters.
The pressure comes as U.S. President Donald Trump considers a possible diesel export ban in an effort to lower domestic fuel prices ahead of the November midterm elections.
One source based in a European capital told Reuters that Washington has asked the European Union to release 120 million barrels of diesel from emergency stocks over the next six months.
U.S. officials have been particularly frustrated with France and Germany, which they believe have not fully implemented earlier commitments to release emergency oil and petroleum reserves.
“It is in Europe’s best interest to work with the United States as we pursue multiple pathways to boost the supply of refined products and lower costs for consumers,” a U.S. official told Reuters.
The warning marks an escalation of U.S. pressure on European governments as the Trump administration weighs restrictions on diesel exports.
Washington is considering the measure as it looks to boost domestic supplies and reduce fuel costs for American consumers.
Any restrictions could also affect European fuel markets, given the region’s growing reliance on supplies from the United States.
Europe has become more dependent on U.S. fuel imports in recent years after banning Russian petroleum products following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
That reliance has increased further following disruptions to Middle Eastern supplies caused by the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.
European markets are therefore increasingly exposed to any reduction in U.S. diesel exports. At the same time, Washington is pressing European governments to tap their emergency inventories to boost supplies and ease pressure on prices.
