British Prime Minister Andy Burnham will announce a new AI defence partnership with the United States on Tuesday, aimed at strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure and detecting threats.
The announcement will come during Burnham's visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, where he is also due to meet U.S. President Donald Trump.
The partnership will bring together Britain's Defence Rapid AI Delivery Taskforce and the U.S. Department of War Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office to speed up the delivery of “trusted, interoperable capabilities” that enhance deterrence.
Burnham said the partnership would bring together experts to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure and make use of AI's potential.
The collaboration will support Britain's efforts to protect critical national infrastructure, including sea lanes and airspace.
Britain, the world's third-largest AI market after the United States and China, has seen early signs that the technology could help revive its stagnant economy. At the same time, concerns are growing over the safety of increasingly powerful AI systems.
Britain is also expected to make AI a key focus during its G20 presidency next year, with the summit scheduled to take place in November in Manchester, where Burnham previously served as mayor.
The partnership comes amid longstanding cooperation between Britain and the United States across defence, technology, finance and foreign policy.
