OpenAI has announced a partnership with the U.S. National Laboratories, granting approximately 15,000 scientists access to its latest AI models. As part of the initiative, OpenAI will work with Microsoft to deploy its o1 AI model (or another o-series variant) on Venado, Los Alamos National Laboratory’s new NVIDIA-powered supercomputer.

A key aspect of the partnership is its role in nuclear security, with OpenAI stating that its models will assist in reducing the risk of nuclear war and securing nuclear materials. The company emphasized that AI safety experts with security clearance will oversee sensitive applications.

This partnership follows OpenAI’s recent launch of ChatGPT Gov, a secure AI platform for U.S. government agencies. The company has also expanded its ties to federal and state institutions, with over 3,500 agencies reportedly using its AI tools.
