Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have begun implementing a landmark 2022 border agreement, launching a land exchange to complete the demarcation of their shared frontier and pave the way for new infrastructure projects.
A joint commission has started work in Kyrgyzstan's Kadamjay district, where officials and technical experts are overseeing the legal and administrative procedures needed to implement the agreement.
Under the deal, the villages of Chong-Gara and Tash-Tobo, previously part of Uzbekistan's Fergana region, will come under Kyrgyz jurisdiction. Around 2,500 people live in the two settlements, most of them ethnic Kyrgyz. Registration procedures are now underway, after which eligible residents will be able to obtain Kyrgyz citizenship. In return, Kyrgyzstan will transfer an equivalent area of land to Uzbekistan.
The agreement forms part of broader efforts across Central Asia to resolve border disputes that have remained unsettled since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Earlier this year, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan also began the physical demarcation of their shared border after signing a treaty that ended one of the region's longest-running territorial disputes. The two countries had experienced years of tension and several deadly clashes over contested border areas before reaching the agreement.
Against that backdrop, implementation of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek agreement reflects a growing preference for negotiated settlements and clearly defined borders.
Officials in Bishkek say the land exchange is intended to bring a final resolution to the remaining disputed sections of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek frontier while creating new opportunities for cross-border development.
The agreement is also expected to deliver practical benefits. A separate 236-hectare land exchange will allow the construction of a new road linking the villages of Sai and Tayan.
The project is expected to improve transport links across the border region and significantly reduce travel times for local communities.
