The U.S. Mint has begun producing a new $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump as part of commemorations marking the United States' 250th anniversary, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The commemorative dollar coin is being minted in Philadelphia for the United States' 250th anniversary, according to the Treasury Department.

The latest design features the words "Liberty", "In God We Trust" and "1776-2026" on the obverse. The reverse depicts the bald eagle from the presidential seal.

It replaces an earlier draft made public in October, which showed Trump with a raised clenched fist and the words "fight, fight, fight", a reference to the 2024 assassination attempt against him.

Trump said in a Fox Business interview that he was "honored" by the coin, calling it an unusual recognition.

Legal questions

The design has prompted legal questions. An 1866 U.S. law bars the use of a living person's portrait on U.S. currency, but that restriction applies to paper money produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing rather than coins minted by the U.S. Mint.

A separate 2020 law authorising the Treasury secretary to mint $1 coins for the 250th anniversary prohibits designs depicting a living person.

Bessent said there was a precedent from the 150th anniversary, when then-President Calvin Coolidge appeared on a commemorative coin.

The Treasury Department said the Trump coin is already in production in Philadelphia.
