Trump nominates Bessent to be US treasury secretary

President-elect Donald Trump picked prominent investor Scott Bessent to take on the role of U.S. treasury secretary on November 22, putting him at the helm of a cabinet position, if confirmed, with vast influence over economic, regulatory and international affairs.

Wall Street had been closely watching who Trump would choose for the coveted role, especially given his plans to remake global trade through tariffs. A handful of finalists emerged in recent days, including former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh and Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan.

Bessent has advocated for tax reform and deregulation, particularly to spur more bank lending and energy production, as noted in a recent opinion piece he wrote for The Wall Street Journal.
