Veteran U.S. politician Mitch McConnell has been admitted to hospital in Washington, DC, according to his office.

A spokesperson for the 84-year-old senator said on Sunday, 14 June that McConnell was receiving treatment, but did not provide details about the reason for his hospitalisation or his current condition.

"He is receiving excellent care," spokesman David Popp said in a brief statement.

Ambulance seen outside home

Two neighbours told Reuters they saw McConnell being taken from his Washington home on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance at around 9am local time.

No further information has been released by his office or medical staff.

The latest hospital visit is likely to raise fresh questions about the health of one of the most influential figures in modern American politics.

Long career in Washington

McConnell has represented the state of Kentucky in the U.S. Senate for decades and previously served as Republican leader in the chamber.

During his time at the top of the party, he played a central role in shaping legislation and guiding judicial and government appointments through Congress.

Last year, McConnell announced that he would retire when his current Senate term ends in early 2027, bringing an end to a political career that has spanned more than four decades.

Health concerns in recent years

The senator has faced several health issues in recent years.

In 2023, he drew widespread attention after freezing during public appearances while speaking to reporters.

Earlier this year, he spent more than a week in hospital after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Despite those setbacks, McConnell has continued to carry out his duties in the Senate and remains one of the most recognisable figures in U.S. politics.

No timeline has been given for when he may leave hospital.
