Trump claims U.S. tariff revenues set to top $600bn

U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted that tariff revenues are poised to exceed $600 billion, claiming these measures have significantly bolstered the nation’s financial strength and international standing.

The claim comes as the U.S. Supreme Court reviews the legality of the tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The administration has indicated it would seek alternative legal routes to preserve the levies should the court rule against their current basis.

Greenland and Denmark reject Trump annexation remarks

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has condemned President Trump’s recent comments regarding the annexation of the Arctic island, declaring that the territory is not for sale.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any hostile action against a NATO ally would undermine the alliance’s post-war security framework. Several European governments have echoed those concerns amid renewed U.S. strategic interest in the region.

U.S. public broadcasting body votes to dissolve

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has voted to cease operations following the U.S. Congress’s decision to eliminate its federal funding, ending over 50 years of support for American public media.

The board opted to fully dissolve the organisation rather than leave it dormant and vulnerable to political manipulation, forcing local broadcasters to rely entirely on private donations and sponsorship to ensure their future survival.

Aliyev calls 2025 a historic turning point for Azerbaijan

President Ilham Aliyev has characterised 2025 as a pivotal year, marking the political conclusion of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and a significant reset in relations with the United States under the Trump administration.

He pointed to the lifting of Section 907 restrictions and progress on the Zangezur Corridor, outlining a broader strategy focused on regional connectivity, the development of an AI hub and the expansion of a privatised defence industry.

Syria denies security incident targeting President Sharaa

The Syrian government has categorically denied social media reports alleging an assassination attempt on President Ahmed al-Sharaa, dismissing the claims as "completely untrue".

State media aired footage showing the president walking through central Damascus and making purchases with the country’s new currency, in what officials said was an effort to dispel rumours amid heightened security following Syria’s political transition in late 2024.
