U.S. President Donald Trump has approved plans to construct a new class of battleships, which he described as larger, faster and significantly more powerful than any previous U.S. warship. His administration has referred to these ships as “Trump-class.”

The project will begin with two ships and could expand to a total of 25 vessels, all expected to be referred to as Trump-class battleships. Speaking in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump stated that the ships would each displace between 30,000 and 40,000 tons, and be “100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built.”

The president said the new ships would serve as the flagships of the US Navy and highlighted plans to accelerate their production. He intends to meet with defence contractors in Florida to discuss speeding up construction schedules and has suggested penalties for companies that fail to meet deadlines. He also confirmed that the administration is building three large aircraft carriers.

Trump indicated that artificial intelligence would be a “big factor” in the design and operation of the new vessels. The announcement was made alongside Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort by the administration to modernise the Navy, including planned upgrades to the service’s headquarters.
