EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas confirmed that the bloc will continue targeting Russia’s war economy, with a new sanctions package expected by next month, while emphasizing the need for strong security guarantees for Ukraine.

Speaking after a virtual European Council summit on Ukraine, Kallas highlighted the EU’s unity in addressing the crisis.

She said Ukraine’s security and Russia sanctions are top priorities for the upcoming meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers.

Kallas warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted to honor any commitments, stressing that security guarantees must be robust enough to prevent further Russian attacks or regrouping.

The EU is  a non state party to the "coalition of the willing", a partnership of countries aligned in March earlier in the year as part of plans by European leaders to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Moscow has not responded to the unveiling of these latest plans to impose further sanctions on its economy by the EU.
