Lebanon experienced a nationwide power outage from midnight on Sunday, officials reported, as authorities work to restore electricity across the country.

Electricité du Liban (EDL), the state electricity company, said a malfunction occurred in a high-voltage transformer at the main Zouk power station in central Lebanon. The fault was caused by extreme heat and humidity, leading to the blackout.

Technical teams are currently working to repair the transformer and restore power as quickly as possible.

Residents have turned to small private generators to meet their electricity needs while the outage continues.

Lebanon has been facing an intense heat wave, with temperatures reaching up to 45°C (113°F) and humidity levels nearing 80%, according to the Meteorological Department.

The country has long struggled with chronic power shortages, with daily blackouts lasting several hours due to outdated transmission networks and insufficient power generation capacity.
