Afghanistan launches irrigation canal to boost farming

Afghan authorities have begun building a 50 million afghani canal in Panjshir province to improve irrigation, support farmers, and create 1,000 jobs, according to Tolonews.

The 50 million afghani (706,215 U.S. dollars) canal will irrigate thousands of hectares of farmland, particularly aiding farming communities that depend on seasonal water supply. Officials said the project will create around 1,000 jobs during both construction and operational phases, providing an economic lift to the region.

Local authorities noted that the improved irrigation network is expected to increase crop yields, bolster food security, and stabilise the local economy.

Panjshir, with its fertile valleys and strong farming traditions, has struggled for years with inadequate irrigation systems. Seasonal droughts and shifting weather patterns have heightened the urgency for reliable water management infrastructure, making this canal a significant development for the province’s agricultural future.
