FIFA will review a proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams, marking the tournament’s centenary.
This comes after the World Cup was expanded from 32 to 48 teams for next year's edition in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
The 64-team proposal was raised by FIFA Council member Ignacio Alonso from Uruguay during a meeting on March 5, 2025, as part of the “miscellaneous” agenda. FIFA acknowledged the proposal and stated it is their duty to analyze any suggestions from Council members.
Infantino described the proposal as interesting and said it should be analyzed further.
