Azerbaijan is quietly facilitating diplomatic efforts between Türkiye and Israel to reduce tensions in Syria, leveraging its close ties with both nations and its rising regional influence following its 2023 victory in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Head of Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, confirmed that Baku has hosted more than three rounds of indirect talks between Turkish and Israeli officials. The aim, he said, is to prevent direct confrontation and manage strategic friction as both countries expand their presence in post-Assad Syria.
“Azerbaijan is making diplomatic efforts for an agreement,” Hajiyev said in remarks to Turkish journalists during a visit coordinated by the Global Journalism Council. “Both Türkiye and Israel trust us.”
