Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan remarked upon progress made towards normalising relations between Baku and Yerevan in a phone call on the first anniversary of the Washington peace summit.
The two leaders discussed the development of economic and trade relations between Baku and Yerevan as a result of peace, noting the export of Azerbaijani products to Armenia, as well as the transit of cargo from Azerbaijan to Armenia.
Aliyev and Pashinyan’s call marks a year since they signed an initial agreement to establish peace in a meeting at the White House, alongside U.S. President Donald Trump.
Both leaders remarked upon the important role played by Trump in advancing the peace process between the two countries.
Aliyev and Pashinyan also exchanged views on the implementation of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), in accordance with the agreements reached in Washington.
The proposed 43-kilometre transit corridor through Armenia’s Syunik province would connect mainland Azerbaijan to its landlocked exclave of Nakhchivan, which is otherwise cut off from the rest of the country.
During their call Aliyev and Pashinyan also emphasised the importance of continuing efforts to advance the peace process, including boosting connectivity and economic cooperation in the region.
