Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has held talks with Ruslan Edelgeriev, Russia's presidential aide and special representative on climate issues, focusing on environmental cooperation, climate diplomacy and the future of collaboration in the Caspian region.
The meeting brought together two senior officials involved in climate and environmental policy at a time when both countries are continuing discussions on regional sustainability and international climate commitments.
During the talks, Bayramov outlined Azerbaijan's experience as host and president of COP29, highlighting the country's efforts to advance dialogue on climate action and strengthen international cooperation during the conference.
He also discussed ongoing engagement with Australia and Türkiye as preparations continue for COP31, underscoring the importance of maintaining momentum on climate initiatives beyond Azerbaijan's presidency.
A significant part of the discussion centred on the Caspian Sea and the environmental challenges facing the region.
The two sides stressed the need for closer cooperation to safeguard the sea's fragile ecosystem and water resources. They agreed that greater attention should be given to practical measures, including the use of modern technologies and innovation to address environmental pressures.
Officials also pointed to the importance of revitalising the bilateral working group dedicated to Caspian issues, describing it as a key platform for advancing joint projects and coordinated action.
Agriculture and resource management were among the areas highlighted as potential fields for deeper cooperation. Both delegations discussed the role that new technologies can play in improving environmental protection and supporting sustainable development goals.
Beyond climate and environmental matters, Bayramov and Edelgeriev reviewed other aspects of Azerbaijan-Russia relations and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
