Uzbekistan will open an embassy in Georgia, the Central Asian country’s presidency has said. The announcement follows talks between Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in Tbilisi.

Mirziyoyev’s visit to Georgia was the first by a top ranking Uzbek leader to the country in more than two decades.

The leaders discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, transport and tourism, and agreed to strengthen intergovernmental and business ties.

Trade between the two countries reached $270 million in 2025 and surpassed $100 million in the first half of 2026. The nations have adopted a plan to boost yearly trade to $1 billion by increasing exports and reducing barriers to trade.

In a symbolic gesture of strengthened relations between the two nations, Mirziyoyev was awarded Georgia’s highest state honour, the Order of the Golden Fleece, at Georgia’s Presidential Palace.

A monument in Tbilisi to the father of the Uzbek language and poet and thinker, Alisher Navoi, was also unveiled in Mirziyoyev’s presence.
