Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has cited Azerbaijan as an example of what he described as a sovereign foreign policy, recalling remarks made by President Ilham Aliyev during talks in Yerevan, where he sharply criticised resolutions adopted against his country by the European Parliament.
Fico said Aliyev was right to argue that the European Parliament should focus on Europe’s own problems rather than, in his words, spreading falsehoods about other states. He added that Europe already faced enough internal challenges.
Speaking on Friday, 9 May, Fico said he was delivering the same message to the European Parliament after it recommended that the European Commission suspend EU funds allocated to Slovakia, a move he described as unjustified.
In a post on social media following his visit to Moscow, Fico wrote: “Just a few hours ago, I concluded my visit to Moscow. This week, I also managed to attend the summit in Armenia, visit Bavaria, and I am pleased with the good news for Slovakia.”
President Aliyev later thanked Fico for his remarks in a post on X, saying he appreciated the Slovak leader’s comments and valued the partnership between the two countries.
The Azerbaijani president also thanked Fico for his hospitality during a recent visit to Slovakia and said he looked forward to meeting him again in Baku.
