AnewZ has premiered The Oligarch’s Design, a long-form investigative documentary marking the launch of AnewZ Investigations, the channel’s new editorial endeavour dedicated to cross-border investigative journalism.
The documentary examines how influence is constructed through financial networks, philanthropy, and carefully shaped narratives, and how these mechanisms can shape conflict, legitimacy, and public perception beyond formal political structures.
The investigation is grounded in open-source intelligence and earlier international inquiries that uncovered the Troika Laundromat, a vast offshore system used to funnel billions of dollars through complex financial structures linked to Russian corporate and political interests. Findings published by leading international investigative organisations form a central part of the documentary’s foundation.
A key focus of the film is the trajectory of Ruben Vardanyan, tracing his transition from Moscow’s financial elite to the political structures of the unrecognised separatist regime after his relocation to the region in 2022 and his public renunciation of Russian citizenship. These developments are examined within a broader geopolitical and financial context, drawing on field reporting and interviews conducted in Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Ukraine.
The documentary brings together analysis from lawmakers, prosecutors, regional experts, and investigative journalists to examine how individual actors can influence regional stability and decision-making beyond public scrutiny.
The Oligarch’s Design was filmed across Italy, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, the United States, Armenia, Israel, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan. Nearly one hundred journalists, producers, cameramen, editors, and researchers contributed to the project, with many working under difficult and high-risk conditions, including active war-zone environments.
With the launch of AnewZ Investigations, the channel signals a long-term investment in investigative journalism that prioritises verification, accountability, and a deeper public understanding of how power operates beyond public view.
