At the Doha Forum, Assistant of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Hikmat Hajiyev and Secretary of the Armenian Security Council Armen Grigoryan discussed the peace process between the two countries.
They focused on the Washington agreement, regional connectivity, economic cooperation, and confidence-building measures.
Speaking on the panel, Hajiyev said the Washington agreement had the potential to “completely change the region of the South Caucasus”, describing it as a historic step after three decades of tension and conflict.
“Unfortunately, for the last 30 years, there was a deficit of peace in the region. There was a conflict and a war. It finally put an end,” he said.
Hajiyev likened the agreement to the Camp David process between Egypt and Israel, saying that while the contexts differ, its impact could be similarly significant.
He said the development had been met with broad approval in Azerbaijan, where hopes for a durable settlement had been longstanding.
“There was a huge jubilation and positive reverberation in Azerbaijani society, because we were waiting for peace for 30 years, and finally, it has been done,” he said.
Hajiyev added that the agreement could help spare future generations from the instability of the early 1990s and support efforts to build lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
The collective-defence agreement between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signals that regional powers no longer want to rely solely on external security guarantees. Whether it becomes a stabilising deterrent or another axis of rivalry remains unresolved.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed, according to the latest data, as uncertainty over the waterway’s reopening kept most shipowners away. Six commodity vessels crossed the strait on Tuesday, down from nine the day before and below the 10-day daily average of 11.
Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains limited on Thursday, with no increase in vessel crossings as U.S.-Iran talks to resolve the conflict remained stalled. Nine commodity vessels transited the key waterway on Wednesday, unchanged from the previous day, according to Kpler data.
Iran has said the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the U.S. fulfils the terms of an interim deal, including lifting the maritime blockade and sanctions and releasing Iran’s frozen assets.
