Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has announced the lifting of restrictions on the transit of goods to Armenia through Azerbaijani territory, during a meeting with Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The first shipment under this new arrangement will be a consignment of Kazakh wheat.

“A new era of peace has begun between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the second meeting of the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan Supreme Interstate Council.

“Today marks, or I would even say, a new stage - the stage of peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” President Aliyev stated.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s office welcomed the move.

“The decision is an important step towards reopening regional communications, building trust, and institutionalising peace between the two countries,” said Nazeli Baghdasaryan, spokesperson for the Armenian Prime Minister.

Armenian Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan added that the first transit shipment is expected to reach Armenia soon.

“Soon, the first batch of Kazakh wheat will enter Armenia via the Aktau-Baku route, followed by the Azerbaijani and Georgian railways. Peace has been established,” Papoyan said.
