Brazil’s Supreme Court has ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to be placed under house arrest over allegations he attempted to overturn the 2022 election results.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the ruling on Monday, citing Bolsonaro’s failure to comply with previous court restrictions. The order also bans him from using a mobile phone—directly or through others—and bars most visitors except legal counsel or those approved by the court.
Bolsonaro is facing trial for allegedly coordinating a coup plot alongside dozens of allies. The case has already sparked friction with U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently linked new tariffs on Brazilian imports to what he described as political persecution of the former leader.
Bolsonaro’s spokesperson confirmed both the house arrest and the restrictions imposed.
