The Netherlands has become the first NATO member to commit funds under a new military financing plan for Ukraine, pledging €500 million (around $578 million) to support Kyiv’s defence needs.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof made the announcement during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to a statement released on Monday.
The funds will go towards the first shipment of US-made weapons provided through NATO’s new Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a mechanism backed by European Allies and Canada.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the move, saying the goal is to supply Ukraine with urgently needed equipment to counter Russia.
“Allied assistance aims to bring the war to a just and lasting end, in support of President (Donald) Trump’s peace efforts,” Rutte said.
The Netherlands’ pledge follows an agreement reached last month between Prime Minister Schoof and President Trump at the White House.
The initiative will deliver regular packages of U.S. military equipment identified by Ukraine as operational priorities.
