Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to visit Algeria on April 20-21 for high-level strategic talks, according to diplomatic sources.
Fidan is also expected to meet with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and inaugurate the Turkish Consulate General in Oran. The discussions will focus on the preparations for the upcoming High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLCC) meeting, which will be held during President Tebboune’s planned visit to Türkiye.
Key areas of focus during Fidan’s visit will include strengthening the legal framework between the two countries through negotiated agreements, as well as exploring opportunities for increased economic cooperation to reach a trade target of $10 billion. Fidan is expected to emphasize Türkiye's commitment to enhancing energy cooperation with Algeria, a crucial partner in Türkiye’s energy security strategy.
Additionally, the visit will cover potential defense industry projects and partnerships, as well as regional and global issues such as the situations in the Sahel, Libya, Syria, and Gaza.
This visit follows a series of recent diplomatic engagements, including a meeting between Fidan and Attaf on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg in February, and Attaf’s participation in the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum in April.
Bilateral relations between Türkiye and Algeria have been strengthened through high-level visits, notably President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visits to Algeria in 2018 and 2020, which helped establish the High-Level Cooperation Council. The first HLCC meeting, held in 2022 during Tebboune’s visit to Türkiye, led to the signing of 15 agreements, further bolstering the strategic partnership.
Algeria plays a vital role in Türkiye's trade and energy diversification strategies, with approximately 1,400 Turkish companies registered in the country, including 60 construction firms. Turkish investments in Algeria have reached $6 billion, and total trade volume between the two countries amounted to $6.42 billion in 2024.
