Syria on Saturday welcomed the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) decision to restore its membership following the fall of the Bashar Assad regime.

In a statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry called the decision "a vital step toward Syria’s reintegration into regional and international communities as a free and just state."

The statement also reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to the OIC’s principles, including cooperation, justice, and dignity.

The ministry expressed its readiness to 'work hand in hand with our brothers in the Islamic world to rebuild Syria and strengthen our region based on shared values of justice, peace, and cooperation.'

Syria also reaffirmed its aspiration to 'build a future where the Syrian people regain their rightful place among nations, contributing to a stronger and more unified Islamic world.'

On Friday, Syria officially regained its membership in the OIC after a 13-year suspension.

Diplomatic sources revealed that Türkiye's initiative during the OIC Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Jeddah played a key role in facilitating Damascus' return to the organization.

On June 24, 2012, the ministerial-level Extraordinary Executive Committee of the OIC convened in Jeddah to discuss the situation in Syria. Amid escalating violence by the Assad regime against its own people, the committee recommended suspending Syria’s OIC membership.

This recommendation was later upheld at the 4th Extraordinary OIC Summit in Mecca on August 14-15, 2012, leading to Syria’s official suspension from the organization.
