Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes off coast of Mexico's Chiapas, GFZ says

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mexico’s Chiapas state on 10 August, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). No immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged.

The quake occurred in the early hours near the Gulf of Tehuantepec, a seismically active region along Mexico’s southern coastline. Authorities and emergency services are closely monitoring the situation, but have reported no disruptions so far.

Chiapas lies within a complex tectonic zone where the Cocos Plate subducts beneath the North American Plate, making it prone to frequent seismic activity. Residents in coastal areas reported feeling tremors, but no injuries have been confirmed.

Seismologists continue to track aftershocks and advise caution, though the event is not currently considered a major threat.
