Iran and Russia renewed calls for diplomatic solutions to end the ongoing regional conflict, while also pledging to deepen bilateral political and economic cooperation following Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Tehran on Monday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said Iran and Russia agree that military action cannot resolve the region’s ongoing tensions, stressing the need for diplomatic and political engagement.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Lavrov after their meeting in Tehran, Araghchi blamed the United States and Israel for the insecurity, citing their military campaign against Iran and the economic blockade imposed on the country.

“We know that this insecure situation is a direct consequence of the military aggression launched by the United States and Israel against Iran,” Araghchi said.

He added that the war and economic blockade were among the main causes of instability across the region.

Araghchi also said Tehran and Moscow oppose what he described as U.S. “belligerent unilateralism” and intend to cooperate internationally to strengthen multilateralism and uphold international law.

He called for a regional security arrangement led by countries in the region, without foreign military involvement.

Lavrov highlights growing economic cooperation

Lavrov described his talks with Araghchi as “fruitful, transparent and frank,” pointing to continued growth in economic ties between the two countries.

“We are witnessing rapid and sustainable growth in bilateral trade,” the Russian foreign minister said.

He noted that Russian technical specialists and experts were gradually returning to the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant project in southern Iran, signalling continued cooperation in the nuclear energy sector.

Lavrov also highlighted opportunities for cooperation in hydrocarbon extraction and transit, adding that Russia supports stability in global energy markets.

During his visit, Lavrov also met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss bilateral relations, strategic cooperation and regional developments.

According to the Iranian presidency, Pezeshkian stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of existing agreements, identifying energy, transport and trade as key priorities.

He said his planned visit to Moscow could help turn existing commitments into concrete outcomes, particularly in energy, infrastructure and transportation.

Pezeshkian also criticised the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, arguing that attacks on Iranian infrastructure and the deaths of senior officials, scientists and schoolchildren violated international norms.

He thanked Russia for its support during the conflict and reiterated the need for a regional security framework based on mutual respect, dialogue and cooperation.

The Iranian president also argued that U.S. military bases in the region contributed to heightened tensions and instability.

In addition to meeting Araghchi and Pezeshkian, Lavrov held talks with Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

The ministry said Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s readiness to help resolve the situation surrounding Iran. He also briefed Iranian officials on his Sunday discussions in Bahrain with representatives of countries on the Arabian Peninsula.
