Iran slams as 'economic terrorism' further U.S. sanctions

Iran has condemned remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on escalating economic and trade sanctions, calling the measures “economic terrorism” and “crimes against humanity”.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry, in a statement, rejected the measures, saying Tehran would stand firm in defending Iran’s national security and interests despite U.S. military, economic and political pressure.

It also linked the new sanctions to the anniversary of the 1953 CIA-led coup in Iran, saying they reflect decades of hostility by successive U.S. administrations.

“Simultaneously with the anniversary of the infamous coup of 19 August 1953, the ruling establishment of the United States claimed to impose extensive economic and commercial sanctions against the Iranian nation.”

Tehran calls sanctions ‘economic terrorism’

The ministry said the U.S. sanctions constitute “economic terrorism” and “crimes against humanity” affecting the rights and economic well-being of Iranians, adding that the U.S. government bears responsibility for their consequences.

“Yet they will undoubtedly have not the slightest effect on the determination of Iranians to safeguard Iran’s independence, dignity, and national sovereignty.”

Araghchi criticises Trump’s ‘Economic D-Day’

Responding to Trump’s description of the sanctions as an “Economic D-Day”, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticised the measures, saying Washington’s insistence on what he called “failed” pressure policies would lead to its “further defeat”.

“The so-called ‘Economic D-Day’ is a diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs,” he said in a post on X.

Iran warns of wider economic impact

Araghchi said Washington’s continued reliance on what he called failed pressure policies would only lead to further defeat and deepen tensions with the Iranian people.

He also warned that U.S. economic measures against Iran threatened the global economy and national sovereignty worldwide.

“Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat - and enmity of Iranians. U.S. economic terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty worldwide,” Iran’s top diplomat added.
