Iran has condemned new U.S. sanctions as “economic terrorism” and “crimes against humanity”, accusing Washington of pursuing a decades-long policy of hostility. Tehran said the measures would not weaken its resolve to defend its sovereignty and national interests.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said U.S. forces have redirected 68 commercial vessels, disabled three and boarded two as part of efforts to enforce a blockade against Iran.
CENTCOM said the actions were taken to ensure compliance with the blockade, as tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran was not ready to make what he called the “right deal” with Washington.
Asked about U.S. military options, Trump said: “It just means that we're seeing what happens.”
He also claimed the U.S. had “total control” of the area around the Strait of Hormuz and said Iran would like to reach an agreement.
Tensions remain high around the crucial energy shipping route as Washington assesses its next steps.
NATO allies discussed possible contributions to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but the effort is not a NATO mission, the alliance said.
France and Britain are leading efforts to build a coalition of around a dozen countries to guarantee safe passage through the strait once tensions ease or the conflict is resolved.
