Syria's General Authority for Land and Sea Ports has signed an $800 million agreement with UAE's DP World to strengthen port infrastructure and logistical services, according to state news agency SANA.

The agreement, finalised on Sunday, builds on a memorandum of understanding signed between the two parties in May. It focuses on developing a multi-purpose terminal at Tartous on Syria’s Mediterranean coast and includes cooperation in establishing industrial and free trade zones.

The signing ceremony was attended by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, highlighting the importance Damascus places on reviving its maritime gateways as part of broader reconstruction efforts.

The deal comes just weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending a U.S. sanctions programme on Syria. The move aims to reintegrate Syria into the international financial system and support the country’s economic rebuilding after years of civil war.

Ending U.S. sanctions is expected to facilitate humanitarian aid, attract foreign investment, and ease trade restrictions, providing a crucial boost for Syria’s fragile economy.
