Kazakhstan and EBRD discuss deepening cooperation on energy transition

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) held talks on advancing cooperation in decarbonization, renewable energy and modernization of the country’s power infrastructure.

Vice Minister of Energy Sungat Yesimkhanov thanked the bank for its long-standing support of Kazakhstan’s energy sector. He reaffirmed the country’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2060 and stressed its active low-carbon economic policies.

The sides reviewed targets to boost renewables from 6% to 15% by 2030 and 50% by 2050, and discussed attracting investors through annual auctions. They also highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry and the EBRD, under which nearly $590 million in renewable energy projects have been financed, adding 788 MW of capacity.

Discussions also covered the Just Energy Transition Platform (JETP), announced by Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the UN General Assembly, which aims to attract climate financing and ensure an inclusive energy transition.

The integration of Western Kazakhstan’s grid with the national system, in partnership with KEGOC, was another focus, along with a joint project to enhance Astana’s power supply through a second power center and 500 kV transmission line, set for completion in 2028.

The Ministry expressed readiness to further deepen its partnership with the EBRD through priority projects supporting sustainable energy transition.
