Iran has expressed a readiness to strengthen defence and military cooperation with Tajikistan during the official visit of Tajik Defence Minister Lieutenant General Emomali Sobirzoda to Tehran.
This was a first foreign visit of Tajikistan’s Defense Minister since his appointment in January.
During the visit Sobirzoda held meetings with Iran's Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General, Mohammad Bagheri.
Both sides stressed the need to expand bilateral cooperation in the fields of defence and security.
According to IRNA, Nasirzadeh described the meeting as a reflection of the “special status” of relations between the two countries. He emphasized the deep historical, cultural, and religious ties between Iran and Tajikistan, characterizing the relationship as "strategic" and rooted in brotherhood.
The Iranian Defense Minister emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral relations and actively participating in international organizations, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), to address shared challenges, including terrorism, extremism, and other security threats.
General Bagheri stated that Iran is prepared to enhance military and defense cooperation with Tajikistan, with a particular focus on training exchanges and joint efforts to combat terrorism. He added that enhancing cooperation with Tajikistan in the fight against terrorism remains a key item on Iran’s agenda.
