A prison riot in Tajikistan’s city of Vahdat left three people dead and three heavily injured, the country’s Ministry of Justice said on Monday. Some media outlets reports today that five to seven prisoners have been killed during an attempted escape from a prison.
According to official information of security authorities, a group of nine prisoners armed with homemade knives attacked guards at the penal colony 20 km (12 miles) east of Dushanbe.
It said that three employees of the facility received serious injuries after being attacked by the group of inmates, who then tried to kill the guards and escape.
It further said that the guards were forced to use firearms against the group of inmates, as a result of which three of them were "neutralized" while the others were detained.
It went on to say that those injured received timely medical care and that their health condition was assessed as normal.
The facility's security and protection system has been fully restored, it added.
Unverified images on Telegram channels showed what they said were the dead prisoners in puddles of blood. At least one prisoner wore a hat with the official Islamic State flag. This channel reported that Islamic State supporters, during the riot, had briefly raised the flag of the Sunni Muslim militant group over the prison.

Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains limited on Thursday, with no increase in vessel crossings as U.S.-Iran talks to resolve the conflict remained stalled. Nine commodity vessels transited the key waterway on Wednesday, unchanged from the previous day, according to Kpler data.
Iran has said the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the U.S. fulfils the terms of an interim deal, including lifting the maritime blockade and sanctions and releasing Iran’s frozen assets.
