Uzbekistan has launched a nationwide environmental initiative titled ‘Day Without Cars’, which will take place twice a month as part of efforts to improve air quality and reduce vehicle emissions.
The campaign is being introduced under a presidential decree signed on 25 March 2026 as part of the national “Clean Air” project. Under the new rules, ‘Car-Free Day’ and ‘Car-Free Week’ campaigns will take place across the country on the 10th and 25th of every month, starting in May.
According to the decree, employees of state organisations and government agencies are prohibited from using official vehicles during the campaign days. Authorities said that if the initiative falls on a working day, drivers’ salaries will still be maintained.
Officials added that using official transport during the campaign would be treated as a violation of ethics and civil service conduct rules. Failure to comply could result in disciplinary measures by the relevant state institutions.
Authorities said the initiative is aimed at protecting public health by reducing vehicle-related air pollution and encouraging greater use of public transport, walking and environmentally friendly forms of mobility.
The campaign also seeks to promote healthier lifestyles and strengthen environmental awareness among the population.
Officials called on government institutions, educational organisations and the wider public to actively support the campaign and contribute to improving Uzbekistan’s environmental situation.
The initiative follows earlier environmental measures introduced under a separate presidential decree adopted in November 2025 to address air pollution in Tashkent.
